David Behrman’s “My Dear Siegfried” // Tim Brady’s “24 Frames”
Tim Brady’s monumental work takes solo guitar to evocative and dramatic new territory. Featuring Stephanie Griffin (viola), Cheryl Seltzer (piano), and Martin Messier & Nelly-Eve Rajotte (video). Behrman’s concert-length work is built around texts by Siegfried Sassoon & S. N. Behrman, and features Eric Barsness & Thomas Buckner (voices), Theodore Mook (cello), Ralph Samuelson (shakuhachi), & Peter Zummo (trombone).

John Eckhardt’s “Xylobiont” // Peter Evans
Bassist John Eckhardt presents his solo work Xylobiont and a new duo project with trumpeter Peter Evans. Among biologists, the term “Xylobiont” means “living with / by / through wood” and hints at the organic qualities of this music, which is informed by his encounters with the music of Feldman, Ligeti or Xenakis, and his own improvisational work. Peter Evans also presents his own innovative solo trumpet work.

This co-presentation by Roulette and Interpretations for the BEYOND CAGE Centenary celebration showcases the pianist Joseph Kubera in Cage’s epic solos, “Music of Changes” and “Concert for Piano and Orchestra”, with Ostravská banda. Other soloists include Kotik in his flute solos from “There is Singularly Nothing”, Conrad Harris in Cage’s amazing and nearly impossible to perform “Freeman Etudes”, and Roscoe Mitchell, premiering “Red Flower On A Bamboo Pole” on soprano saxophone.

American born, Australian-based composer and improviser Erik Griswold presents the New York premiere of his prepared piano tour-de-force “Wallpaper Music,” and the duo of Köln-based flutist Camilla Hoitenga and Estonian pianist Taavi Kerikmae present new works framed by the classic avant-garde of Niccolò Castiglioni’s “Gymel”.

Steve Swell and Omar Tamez pay homage to Tamez’s father Nicandro Tamez, a prolific yet unsung Mexican composer in the avant garde tradition, and Swell premieres his new long-form work “Composite #8″, with Omar Tamez (guitar) Steve Swell (trombone) Darius Jones (alto) Jonathan Golove (cello) James Ilgenfritz (bass). Renowned composer and multi-instrumentalist Douglas Ewart presents Water is Tops, using sound, spoken word, and movement arts to explore the sonic, ritual, philosophical aspects of water, with multi-instrumentalist J.D. Parran, dancer/choreographer Ni’ja Whitson, and others.

Composer and woodwind player Marty Ehrlich presents the NY premiere of his string quartet Plowshares People, as well as two world premieres of Lay Down Your Weary Tunefor solo clarinet and a new work for string quartet plus alto saxophone, with Jennifer Choi and Cornelius Dufallo – violins; Lev Zhurbin – viola; Alex Waterman – cello. “For Living Lovers” is the instrumental duo of the exceptional acoustic guitarist Brandon Ross and acoustic bass guitarist Stomu Takeishi, joined by JT Lewis –drums, and Stephanie Richards – trumpets/flugelhorn.
